    Yesterday marked the historic first step in ratifying CETA in the Netherlands.

    This is important for Dutch SME's who can be more competitive in the Canadian market. As Chris Herrius of climate designers Jaga explains, "#CETA suddenly gave us an additional 8% negotiating space during contract discussions".


    Next step is for CETA to be debated and voted on in the Eerste Kamer.

    Today, the Consider Canada City Alliance (CCCA) announced the appointment of Niloo Boroun as its new Executive Director. Ms. Boroun has already assumed the role and will be based out of Toronto.

    “I am honoured to be leading the Consider Canada City Alliance and look forward to working along side our vibrant membership as we promote our cities and regions to an international audience,” said Ms. Boroun. “The rich partnerships between the CCCA, the Prime Minister’s Office, various ministries within the federal government and a close working relationship with Invest in Canada is deeply encouraging and has already produced a number of strategic initiatives for 2020.”

    Among her years of work in both the public and private sector, Ms. Boroun notably has held roles in the Office of the Premier (Ontario) as a Senior Policy Advisor to the Premier, a Senior Policy Advisor and Public Appointments to the Minister of Research and Innovation (Ontario) and as Manager, and Acting Director, of Investment Services and Global Markets for Toronto Global (formally Invest Toronto). Ms. Boroun is also the Principal and Founder of the private sector based LCG Consulting. In this role, Ms. Boroun has undertaken project work for a wide range of clients across Canada and international markets such as Asia, North and South America and designs, implements and mobilizes international delegation strategies- focused in the tech sector.

    Compusult, a world-leading Canadian geospatial software firm, has opened its European Headquarters in The Hague. The festive opening event took place on Friday the 17th of January 2020.

    The company was founded in 1985, and from its humble beginnings, co-founders Barry O’Rourke and Paul Mitten have grown the company to 100 employees. When they were selected to develop the Core GIS Increment 3 for the NATO Communications and Information Agency (NCI Agency), Compusult decided to open a European office, with headquarters remaining in Mount Pearl, Newfoundland and Labrador.

    “For years, we have been involved in business outside of Canada and have spent much time in Europe. Opening this new office was a natural progression”, says Mr. Mitten, Compusult’s vice president.

    Assistance by local network

    When the Canadian Embassy in the Netherlands got involved in the expansion plans of Compusult, they called in the support of their partner for market expansion services in the region; InnovationQuarter. As partners in a Softlanding Program, the regional economic development agency for the greater Rotterdam – The Hague area was enthusiastic to help. InnovationQuarter, together with the Netherlands Foreign Investment Agency and Steenworp assisted with guidance on how to set up a company in the Netherlands and finding the right premises for Compusult.

    NCI Agency

    The main reason the company choose for the Netherlands and more precisely The Hague, is the prominent presence of the NCI Agency here. Mr. O’Rourke, Compusult’s president, is involved in project management and software design with the agency. Compusult’s permanent Europe office will allow for even more effective client support. “This strategic decision will allow us to better serve NATO, and have a base for even more business operations in Europe and around the world.”

    Compusult’s flagship product is Web Enterprise Suite (WES) – a comprehensive software solution to help organizations manage, organize and access data, so they can make more well-informed decisions. WES and its companion products use industry standards to keep geospatial information safe, current, and organized.     A member of Compusults' staff also attended the NCCC New Year Kick-off event last week at the Ambassadors Residence. It was a great way to get to know other Canadians and start the networking process.

    May 4, 2020 marks the 75th anniversary of the liberation of the Netherlands at the end of World War II by Canadian and Allied Forces. Several Winnipeg and Manitoba based units served in the Netherlands including Lord Strathcona’s Horse, 12th Manitoba Dragoons, The Fort Garry Horse, Royal Winnipeg Rifles, The Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders of Canada, Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry, and 402 (City of Winnipeg) Squadron of the Royal Canadian Air Force. Almost 6000 Canadian soldiers are buried in the Netherlands and Canada is still fondly remembered by the Dutch for ending their occupation and oppression during the war. The Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra is invited to the Netherlands to perform in a historic tour to commemorate this important milestone anniversary.

Two soloists from the Netherlands, Renate Arends, Soprano and Henk Neven, Baritone will join Canadian soloist Andrew Naji on the stage along with the Winnipeg Singers, Toonkunst Koor Amsterdam, and the WSO.

Do not miss the Business Women in International Trade (BWIT) business delegation to WBENC 2020, taking place from June 21‑25 in Atlanta, Georgia.

    The Women’s Business Enterprise National Council (WBENC) National Conference and Business Fair is the largest supplier diversity conference for women‑owned businesses (51%+) held in the U.S. The conference will include panel discussions, networking receptions, a huge reverse tradeshow where companies have the chance to pitch their products and services at a variety of booths, and B2B meeting opportunities with large American corporations. The Business Women in International Trade (BWIT) team has been leading business delegations to WBENC for over 10 years with extremely favourable outcomes for the participating companies.

    Last year’s trade mission to WBENC in Baltimore, Maryland was a huge success, with post‑event survey returns indicating that 91% of delegates generated business leads during the event, 83% of whom scored five or more solid leads. The trade mission was organized in partnership with the Embassy of Canada to the United‑States in Washington, DC, the Women’s Enterprise Organisations of Canada (WEOC), Export Development Canada (EDC), and the Business Development Bank of Canada (BDC), and featured the largest Canadian delegation to date, comprised of over one hundred participants.

    Overall, the mission’s agenda was rich with opportunities for businesswomen to network and scale their businesses.

    The BWIT team has already begun preparations for WBENC 2020, and is aiming for this year’s trade mission delegation to be even larger and more successful. Small or medium‑sized enterprises (SMEs) interested in participating in the mission are also encouraged to submit an application for CanExport funding in advance of registration opening, which will open in early 2020. The CanExport SMEs program is a multi‑year, Government of Canada program delivered through the Trade Commissioner Service, which provides financial assistance to Canadian SMEs who are seeking new export opportunities, especially in high‑growth emerging markets. The CanExport SMEs project funding limit is $75,000 to cover up to 75% of eligible expenses. Companies who apply for funding to cover their participation in a BWIT trade mission are also allowed to disregard the usual project minimum of $20,000, and submit an application for a smaller amount of money (to specifically cover their participation in the mission).     Overview:

    The Site Manager is responsible for all the activities involved in the installation of our automated material handling systems on large, complex projects. You are proactive in reporting and resolving logistic, technical or organizational problems and have good communication with the customer regarding progress, out of scope work, non-conformities, timely payments and all other site related issues. You’ll be part of the project team, led by the project manager. This position will be focused predominantly on projects running at YVR International Airport.

    Responsibilities & Tasks:

    • Generates project installation plan prior to the start of installation activities, which describes way of working on site.
    • Management and direction of the project site activities to ensure work is on budget, on time and to specifications. Pro-active when deviations are arising or encountered.
    • Leadership of installation crews and sub-contractors to assure quality of work.
    • Managing installation budget and controlling scope of installation subcontractors.
    • Preservation of the intended system design to meet the system performance and technical specification requirements.
    • Review of and input into the project master schedule to achieve timely completion of the project.
    • Implementation and management of the site safety plan.
    • Creation and distribution of site logs, site reports, progress reports and site problem reports.
    • Communicate and work closely with various stakeholders including the project team, clients, and subcontractors
    • Organization and implementation of the Site Logistics Plan

     Qualifications and Skills:

    • A minimum of 7+ years’ experience in site management of larger/complex installations with a high level of automation.
    • Demonstrated leadership qualities developing and maintaining strong relations with all key stakeholders including the Customer.
    • Ability to manage mechanical and electrical installers assuring that work is executed as per the project schedule.
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
    • Excellent computer skills (Microsoft Office Suite).
    • Ability to apply a high degree of common sense.
    •  Ability to travel as required (potential for up to 15%).
    • Valid passport.
    • Sound knowledge of contract law.
    • Solid understanding of WorkSafe BC rules and regulations.
    • Must be able to obtain a security clearance pass.
    • Technical Degree or Diploma, or Trade Certification with commensurate experience.

    From now on the Netherlands and the Kingdom of the Netherlands can be recognised internationally by a new logo. The logo is characterised by two symbols: NL and a stylised orange tulip. The logo replaces the much used ‘Holland tulip’ of the Netherlands Board of Tourism & Conventions’ (NBTC).

     The new style is the result of a strategy developed to more clearly show what the Netherlands has to offer to the world. Minister Kaag (Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation): ‘The new logo can be applied across a range of fields, from high tech to agrifood and from sport to culture. A clear cut international image is positive for our exports and the attraction of investment and talent.’

    Europe's most competitive economy

    Minister Wiebes (Economic Affairs and Climate): ‘It is important to convey to the world what we are good at. According to the World Forum, the Netherlands is the most competitive economy of Europe and the fourth most competitive in the world. We also create innovative solutions to technical and social challenges and work collaboratively across borders of both sectors and countries.’

    Ministries, embassies and the Netherlands Enterprise Agency can use the new style from January onwards. The topsectors, universities, cities, sports federations and other government and private sector organisations who work together with the government on a project can also do so.

    Trade missions and conferences

    The logo can be used for conferences and trade missions, on pavilions at international expositions and for a variety of other occasions in different combinations. It is also possible to place ‘Kingdom of the Netherlands’ next to the logo in case of use by the Carribean parts of the Kingdom.

    Canadian company FreshBooks, America’s second largest accounting software firm for small business, has announced it is opening its first international office in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. The new office strengthens FreshBooks’ presence within Europe, while ushering in the next phase of its global expansion.

    Serving small business

    Established in 2004 in Toronto, FreshBooks has since helped more than 20 million small businesses and self-employed professionals. The company currently has paying customers in 160 countries. It differentiates itself by building easy-to-use accounting software and delivering best-in-class customer service.

    “While we’ve been serving customers around the world for more than a decade, today marks the first time we are putting boots on the ground outside of North America,” said Mike McDerment, CEO and Co-Founder at FreshBooks.

    “We’re looking forward to making Amsterdam our home away from home, and we see this as the next step towards our mission of reshaping the world to suit the needs of self-employed professionals,” McDerment said.

    Dutch tech talent

    While FreshBook considered a number of cities for its first global office, it selected Amsterdam because it was “consistently impressed by the calibre of Amsterdam’s tech talent and the city’s alignment with our core values,” said Stefano Grossi, General Manager, FreshBooks Amsterdam.

    “Having been recognized six times by Canada’s Great Place to Work awards, we’re also excited to bring our positive company culture to our Amsterdam office, enabling our employees to have real impact in further building FreshBooks and helping self-employed professionals grow their businesses,” Grossi said.

    As part of FreshBooks’ commitment to growing within Amsterdam, the company is seeking to hire 75 employees over the next two and a half years, primarily in engineering, sales, and customer support roles. By bringing Amsterdam talent on board, FreshBooks will further expand its engineering team, reach new customers, and increase global hours of operation for its customer support, the company stated in a press release.

    Merchandise Exports since CETA (Oct 2017-June 2019) up 9.1%The European Union represents Canada’s second largest merchandise export destination after the United States, accounting for approximately 7.5% of Canadian global merchandise exports over the last five years. On September 21st,  2017, the Canada–European Union Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA), Canada’s most ambitious trade agreement since the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), entered into force.

    According to Statistics Canada, exports to the Netherlands led all major European destinations and advanced 56.0%, on the back of higher exports of energy products and aluminum. However, this number is likely inflated by trans-shipments destined to other European countries, as the Netherlands is home to the largest port in Europe (Port of Rotterdam). Other notable increases include Ireland (cereals and energy products), Italy (pharmaceuticals), Poland (energy products), and Germany (vehicle & parts and machinery). In contrast, exports contracted slightly to Sweden (mineral ores), the UK (nickel and precious stones & metals), and France (oil seeds and machinery).

    Since the implementation of CETA, Canadian exporters have seen positive results across many sectors. Of the major export sectors, the most impressive growth is found in aluminum, where exports rose 252.0% mostly due to unwrought aluminum destined to the Netherlands. Vehicles and parts (passenger vehicles), energy products (crude oil), miscellaneous base metals (cobalt), and pharmaceuticals (dosage medicaments) also recorded significant growth during this period. Moreover, products that saw the largest declines in tariffs as a result of CETA saw the largest trade gains (a more in‑depth analysis can be found in “CETA benefits already visible a year after its entry into force”).
