    • Kunsthal Rotterdam

    The magic of the northern lights, idyllic expansive landscapes, and impressive panoramic views of the Arctic. Kunsthal Rotterdam will be showing examples of the majestic art of Canadian painting between 1910 and 1940 – immensely popular back home, but hardly known in the Netherlands.

    A mythical image of Canada

    ‘Magnetic North’ presents over eighty magical paintings and thirty sketches by the Canadian modernists. At the beginning of the twentieth century, these artists moved away from the crowded cities to settle deep in Canadian nature. Through experimenting, they were searching for a new visual language to match the way in which Canadian society was expanding and changing at that time. The members of the Group of Seven, a famous collective of landscape painters, as well as the artist Tom Thomson who was their source of inspiration, created an almost mythical, exalted image of Canada in their paintings. Depicting an uncultivated territory, they ignored the reality of the country’s original inhabitants and its rapidly growing population and industrialisation.

    At the heart of the exhibition, photographic and video material puts these paintings in a critical context. Seen from the perspective of the First Nations, this documentation offers a framework for the historical narratives that are missing from these famous paintings. Also part of the exhibition is the work of Emily Carr, who was a contemporary of these artists and known for her paintings that did pay attention to the native communities of Canada in the early twentieth century.

    For this exhibition, Kunsthal Rotterdam has entered into an international collaboration with the Art Gallery of Ontario in Toronto, Canada, the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa, and Shirn Kunsthalle in Frankfurt, Germany.

    The NCCC will be organising an event during the exhibition. Dates and details will depend on the prevailing Corona rules nearer the time.

    The European Commission, in cooperation with the European Union Chamber of Commerce in Canada, EUCCAN, is organising a round table for SMEs on 21 September 2021 to mark four years since CETA’s provisional entry into force. SMEs will hear from other European companies’ experience in leveraging the agreement to enter the Canadian market and learn about the opportunities created by CETA, as well as get practical input from experts on how to tap into resources such as the EU’s Access2Markets portal, the Enterprise Europe Network (EEN) and the services of national trade promotion authorities. Concrete suggestions made during the round table will feed into the Commission’s input for the EU-Canada action plan to assist SMEs better to exploit CETA’s opportunities.

    The EU and Canada feature some of the most dynamic economies in the world. Canada is the world’s ninth largest economy by GDP and it is a major importer of goods and services providing many opportunities for EU businesses of all sizes.

    CETA is an ambitious and inclusive free trade agreement that covers virtually all sectors and aspects of EU-Canada trade. Since September 2017, its broad scope offers a full range of benefits and advantages for EU businesses including SMEs in a wide range of sectors. Thanks to CETA, SMEs can leverage preferential access and reduced barriers to help grow their business. CETA, is more important than ever in advancing businesses’ economic recovery during the COVID-19 pandemic and in helping SMEs grow their businesses.

    Save The Date

    After consulting the Advisory Board, and other key stakeholders of the horticulture technology industry, Greentech have decided to change the dates and the concept of GreenTech Amsterdam to GreenTech Live & Online on 28 – 30 September this year.

    The full physical show of GreenTech Amsterdam will be rescheduled to Tuesday 14 – 16 June 2022.

    GreenTech Live & Online: 28 - 30 September 2021
    The horticulture market is thriving. Knowledge sharing and innovations are key to stay on top of the wave. To provide these insights we successfully organised a variety of online events during the pandemic period for our community. This resulted in reaching new audiences, increasing engagement and thus expanding our global community.

    Therefore, instead of our full physical show we organize the alternative GreenTech Live & Online, in blended format (both physical and digital). The focus is on global reach for this event.

    More details will follow.

    Expanding global markets, especially in emerging countries, offer business opportunities for all, including fraudsters and members of organized crime. Fraud in international trade is a risk with costly consequences for all parties involved. Money laundering, the use of containers to commit fraud as well as piracy and hijacking are all part of elaborate fraud schemes. Fraud affects traders, shippers, logistic companies, insurers, banks and all other parties involved in international trade, transport and banking transactions. It is of vital importance to identify misuse and fraud before it happens, before documents are submitted or payments are made.

    This full day seminar covers in detail the different manifestations of fraud in international trade. The experts will clarify how to recognize red flags and criminal behaviour in advance in order to avoid losses. In doing so, they are going to address the risks for all parties involved and explain how to minimize those risks. How can duped businesses and private parties recover their assets and what can businesses do to trace fraudsters? These and more questions will be answered during this full day seminar.

    October Lightning Talks and Kunsthal Rotterdam Visit

    Following the government announcement on Tuesday that the 1.5m distance rule has been rescinded, we can finally plan for an in-person event.

    For our October Lightning Talks, we would like to combine the online portion with a visit to the Kunsthal Rotterdam which has just opened the Magnetic North Exhibition featuring the Canadian Group of Seven. We will have a guided tour of the exhibition at 3pm, the talks at 4pm (in-person and online) and then a networking drinks & snacks session at 5pm. This will be a great opportunity for our new Trade Commissioners to meet some members in person and for us to introduce our Dutch colleagues to some iconic Canadian culture.

    15.00 - 16.00  Guided tour of the exhibit

    16.00 - 17.00

    Meet The New Trade Commissioners

    Early in September, Sameena Qureshi returned to Canada to prepare for another assignment. On behalf of all the members, we would like to thank her for all her support and collaborative efforts during the last 5 years.
    Although Sameena will be sadly missed, we are excited to welcome her replacement - Adam Barbolet. In addition, the summer also saw the return to Canada of Caroline Balduc. She has been replaced by Fanny Bousquet who will focus on Science, Tech and Innovation. Lets meet them and get to know them.

    Transitioning Employees Back To Work

    After a full year of working partially or fully from home, some people are tired and losing motivation whilst others are thriving. Many are convinced that they don't want to return to working at the office full time. Surveys suggest that a hybrid option of 2 - 3 days working from home is the preferred choice.
    Can you accommodate that? Must you? What if you don't want that? How will you transition employees back to work and determine KPI's? How will your managers have to change how they manage employees? And what does that mean for your office equipment and buildings? In this session, find out what Bill Truelove from Carnival Corporation is doing to manage the transition and 'reboard' employees.

    CEOs Speak - Resilience; Operating Business Beyond COVID

    In the spring this year, NCCC member Houser Henry & Syron interviewed a number of CEO's and Directors, including some of our members, for their Mid-Market Report . The results are in.

    Will there be a return to business as usual? Many interviewees noted their efforts to diversify their supply chains (many focusing on increasing the localisation of their supply network). Those with multiple sites improved their inventory management and procurement systems but will localisation continue? Will leaders continue to invest in new technology and automation? While some clearly expect that the opening of borders will revive some face-to-face activities, it is also clear that digital will remain a key part of the customer and partner interaction. But what will be the right balance? Find the answers to these questions and more in this online discussion.

    17.00 - 18.30 The session will be followed by a borrel and informal networking.

    Please bring your Museumkaart with you if you have one. Registration is necessary so that we can book the required number of tour guides and arrange catering.

    NCCC members - free
    Friends and guests - 10.00 Euros with museum card, 25.00 Euros without.

    The event details are subject to change if the Corona rules change or require QR codes to enter the Museum.

    Friday 10 December 2021
    ICC Netherlands Centennial Conference
    Peace Palace, The Hague

    Today, a century ago, a group of visionary Dutch entrepreneurs founded ICC Netherlands, in the aftermath of the First World War, when no world system of rules governed trade, investment, finance or commercial relations. ICC Netherlands’ founders decided not to wait and instead organized themselves to set global standards for business, in cooperation with entrepreneurs from other countries.

    ICC Netherlands became one of the first local offices of the International Chamber of Commerce, which would quickly become ICC The world business organization, the largest business organization in the world, currently representing 43 million member companies in 130 countries. Up until today they are being called ‘Merchants of Peace’, as ICC was founded under the covenant ‘if goods don't cross borders, soldiers will’.

    Reason for ICC Netherlands to reflect on its 100th anniversary and on the preconditions for sustainable international trade for the century to come on Friday 10 December 2021.

    Mark your calendar for Friday 10 December 2021 for the unique ICC Netherlands Centennial Conference with speakers and guests from home and abroad. We eagerly look forward to welcoming you at the Peace Palace in The Hague.

    Further information will follow. In case you have questions, please contact the ICC Netherlands office at info@icc.nl

    Expo 2022 Floriade Almere will be the 7th International Horticultural Expo in the Netherlands. For six months, the attention to the theme ‘Growing Green Cities’ will be focused on the cities of the future. Visitors will have a unique and meaningful experience: during the expo they will be invited to ‘explore, touch and change’.

    This expo will be the start of a new city district close to Amsterdam in the Netherlands called Almere. Almost everything that will be built for the exhibition will become a permanent part of the legacy of Almere. The structures will remain and become part of the community for future activities.

    The Earth has seven billion inhabitants and growing, and more than fifty percent live in cities. By 2050, this percentage will have increased to nearly seventy percent. With continued and relentless urbanisation, we have no option but to look for new ways to keep our cities safe, healthy and attractive and to find a better balance between ‘grey’ and ‘green’ infrastructure. We invite the world to join us and to contribute to our theme: Growing Green Cities.

    Within this context, four sub-themes are explored:

    Green: Parks – vertical green on buildings and green structures make cities more attractive and resilient;

    Food:Food habits, -production, -waste, -safety and food security solutions;

    Health:The contribution of green structures to a healthy living environment as well as the
    contribution made by green spaces to the physical and mental vitality of the citizens;

    Energy:Finding solutions to address sustainable energy, heat stress and climate adaptation, as well as the contribution of green spaces for a liveable city.

    Food production plays a major role in the green city of the future. The question is, what role can agriculture and horticulture play in accelerating this vision? The Netherlands is the second largest food producer worldwide, which is special given its small area for growing. This makes the Netherlands a hotspot for potential agricultural and horticultural innovations.

    Floriade will open its doors for six months from: April-October 2022.
